Sonoma County Wine Library Presentation
ASWA Vice President David A. Barber 27 January 2012
In the evening of January 27, 2012, coordinated by the Wine Library Associates of Sonoma County, the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) presented a wine tasting in Healdsburg, California. The event was titled “Non-Vinifera Wines of the East” and featured Dave Barber, Vice President of ASWA. Mr. Barber began the evening by explaining the biological classification of all grapes into their many species. After discussing the indigenous locations of many of the species, he then began to explain the various types of propagations of new varietals, whether they are crosses of varietals within one species or hybrids of varietals between multiple species.
Mr. Barber then led the forty-plus attendees through a tasting of six pre-poured wines selected to present typical attributes of their specific varietals. The first wine was a Dry Traminette (2010) from Fulkerson Wine Cellars, NY, followed by the 2010 Cold Harbor White made by James River Wine Cellars, VA, which is made exclusively from the Vidal Blanc grape. The next wine was the 2010 Tyrell, which is a blend of six varietals of Muscadine by the Vineyard of the Scuppernong, NC. A blend of Catawba, Isabella, Vincent and Concord varietals entitled River Run by Coyote Moon Vineyards, NY was the next wine to be tasted. Rounding out the formal presentation were Bordeleau Winery, MD with their Chambourcin varietal and the 2010 Norton from Laurita Winery, NJ.
After the formal presentation and discussion about the six wines, the attendees were then invited to graze on some specially prepared hors d’oeuvres and taste some of the twenty-four additional east coast wines opened for the evening.
This highly successful, educational evening was well received by all those in attendance. Many had never even heard of most of the varietals, let along being able to actually taste them. The appreciation of grapes grown and wine made outside of California was greatly increased.
