Supported Virginia's Congressional delegation by facilitating Virginia wine presentations at Richmond’s Capitol Holiday Tree Reception in the Russell Caucus Room. The reception was well-attended by members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and was an excellent venue to showcase the Commonwealth's best wine as well as discuss the strong growth and economic viability of Virginia's wine industry and agritourism connections.

October 5, 2004

Awarded Monteith Trophy to the Congressional Wine Caucus on Capitol Hill. Co-Chairmen of the Caucus, Representatives Radanovich and Thompson from California received the trophy, which is awarded to “… individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves in contributing to the development of the American wine industry.” The trophy was first awarded in 1980. It is held by the awardee for one year, but the name or the individual or organization is engraved on the trophy forever.

In cooperation with the Congressional Wine Caucus, hosted the 2005 Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition Awards and Tasting Reception in the House Agriculture Committee Room of the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C. During the event, the following awards were given:

• Monteith Trophy to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Receiving the award was Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens’ Executive Director, James Rees, for providing the American public with an opportunity to personally experience how viticulture and enology historically evolved as an agricultural, economic and social component of the American society, now embodied in the annual spring and fall wine festival and sunset tours of the mansion.


• Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition Best of Show Tiffany Jefferson Loving Cup to “Shep” and Jane Rouse of Rockbridge Vineyard in Raphine, Virginia.


• Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition Best of Category Certificates to Guy and Nicole Loeffler of Horizon Cellars (NC), Jeff and Tamara Stone of Wintergreen Winery (VA), Congressman Randy Kuhl on behalf of Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars (NY), Jason Tesauro representing Barboursville Vineyards (VA), plus Roger Dixon and Cameron Stark of Unionville Vineyards (NJ).

October 7-9, 2005

Acted as industry liaison and wine consultant for the Mount Vernon Fall Wine Festival and Sunset Tour. Coordinated the selection of participating wineries via a special lottery which will eventually give all of the Commonwealth’s wineries an opportunity to be served at Mount Vernon.

The event celebrates the history of wine in Virginia with exclusive candlelight tours of the Mansion and wine cellar, an appearance by “George and Martha Washington”, and blues music on the east lawn overlooking the scenic Potomac River.

October 5, 2005

Held a highly successful wine auction that raised $112,000 for the Bush/Clinton Katrina relief effort. Over 350 members of the Washington, D.C. and area businesses, lobbying and wine-interested community attended the event which featured 127 individual wine lots (one special edition bottle to a case plus of wine) for the silent auction and 24 rare wine lots (special magnums and signature wine bottles) in the live auction.

Sponsored by the Congressional Wine Caucus, contributions to the auction were from a consortium of California wine organizations, including the Wine Institute and WineAmerica, and from wineries in New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Virginia.

August 20-21, 2005

Hosted the 30th Annual Virginia Wine Festival at Historic Longbranch in Millwood, Virginia. The festival celebrates the success of Virginia wine, is the oldest wine festival on the East Coast, and is conducted as a fund-raiser to support the viticulture community through advocacy, education, promotion, and support. This year, Virginia winery participation was the largest in the festival’s history with nearly 60 wineries.

Started planning for the 31st annual Virginia Wine Festival to be held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia, on September 30 - October 1, 2006.

August 20, 2005

Presented the First Virginia Wine Industry Lifetime Achievement Award to Juanita G. Swedenburg, owner of Swedenburg Estate Vineyard in Middleburg, Virginia, and founding member of the VWGA. Honored by the Vinifera Wine Growers Association during the 30th annual Virginia Wine Festival at Historic Long Branch Estate in Millwood, Virginia, on the 20th of August, Juanita received her plaque from Gordon Murchie. The plaque was inscribed as follows:

Lifetime Achievement Award Presented to Juanita G. Swedenburg In Recognition of Exceptional Personal Contributions To the National Effort to Achieve a Positive U.S. Supreme Court Decision Regarding the Direct Shipment of Wine from Producers to Consumers in the United States May 16, 2005.

Presented the First Virginia Wineries Association Lifetime Achievement Award to Gordon W. Murchie, President of the VWGA and retiring executive director of the Virginia Wineries Association. Gordon was feted at the August First Annual Virginia Wine Industry’s Honors Program held at the Omni Hotel in Richmond on August 1, 2005. Felicia Warburg Rogan, past chairwoman of the Virginia Winegrowers Advisory Board, and owner of Oakencroft Vineyard and Winery presented a silver wine trophy engraved with the following tribute:

The Gordon W. Murchie Lifetime Achievement Award In Appreciation of His Selfless And Unwavering Support of the Virginia Wine Industry, 2005.

The stated intent of the Virginia Wineries Association is for this “Gordon W. Murchie Lifetime Achievement Trophy” to be a perpetual award that, in the future, will be presented to other individuals determined to have made major contributions to the growth and sustainability of the Virginia wine industry.

June-July 2005

Coordinated and conducted the First Annual Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Virginia. Our objective was to focus on the increasing quality of wines made from vinifera (European) grapes on the East Coast and to increase public awareness and consumer appreciation of these wines. Open to wineries from all Atlantic coastal states plus Vermont and West Virginia, the competition judged 319 entries from 10 East Coast states. One Best of Show, 17 Best of Category, 13 gold, 56 silver, and 132 bronze medals were awarded.

In June and July of 2005, the Second Annual Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition will be held in the Regency Club at Dominion Valley, near Haymarket, Virginia.

For the 11th year, consulted and facilitated Virginia winery participation in the Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival and Sunset (Mansion) Tour.

In June and July of 2005, the Second Annual Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition will be held in the Regency Club at Dominion Valley, near Haymarket, Virginia.

March 14 - 16, 2005

Participated in Wine America's Wine and Grape Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., visiting Congressional Senate and House members of the Virginia Delegation to bring up issues important to the wine industry. Some issues covered were: specialty crops, grape and wine research, agricultural job programs, Marketing Access Program (MAP), and tax issues (inheritance, TTB user fees and the special occupation tax). Also participated in special wine tasting for Congressional staff in the Montpelier Room of the Library of Congress.

February 3, 2005

Facilitated the presentation of Virginia wines for the Asian American Community Reception with Virginia's Governor, Lieutenant Governer, Attorney General, Cabinet Secretaries, and General Assembly members. Other attendees represented the Virginia Asian Advisory Board, the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans of Virginia, Asian American Society of Central Virginia, Organization of Chinese Americans, National Congress of Vietnamese Americans, Alliance of Chinese Community Organizations of America, Organization of Korean American Women, US Sikh Chamber of Commerce, Asian American Action Fund, Korean American Society of Greater Richmond, and the Filipino American Association of Central Virginia. The meeting provided a great place to showcase Virginia wines.

October 2006

Coordinated the 2006 Atlantic Seaboard Vinifera Wine Competition Awards and Tasting Reception. This event was conducted under the auspices of the Congressional Wine Caucus in the Longworth House Office Building’s Agricultural Committee Room overlooking the Capitol. Key Congressional members, staff, and wine industry representatives attended the event to honor East Coast winemakers and appreciate their wine. Also, started planning the 2007 event.

June-July 2006

Coordinated and conducted the Second Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition in the elegant Regency Club at Dominion Valley, near Haymarket, Virginia. Sponsors were the Arton Glass Company, Girls’ Night Out Transportation Ltd., Heritage Hunt Golf and Country Club, Stonewall Golf Club, and the Regency at Dominion Valley Community. The competition resulted in 300 entries from 8 East Coast states including all Atlantic coastal states, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and West Virginia. One Best of Show, 15 Best of Category, 10 gold, 56 silver, and 85 bronze medals were awarded.

May 19-21, 2006

For the 12th year, consulted and facilitated Virginia winery participation in the Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival and Sunset (Mansion) Tour.

While visitors flock to this historic site 365 days a year, one weekend each spring, hundreds of people descend upon the estate for the festival, which showcases local Virginia wineries amidst the backdrop of the Mount Vernon mansion, the Potomac River, and the music of local jazz bands.

May 5, 2006

Represented the Virginia wine industry at the Foreign Affairs Day, which was attended by 500 retired Foreign and Civil Service Officers, plus other foreign affairs-related agency representatives and current State Department personnel. The annual event is a full day of special briefings and seminars concerning each of the geographic areas of the world.

Worked with Alta Cassady, Manager of Partnership Relations for Jamestown 2007, to arrange an information table on the 400th celebration of the May 1607 founding of Jamestown and its role in American winemaking. Served a Virginia wine, a Viognier from Horton Cellars, which was mentioned in the the Director General's opening remarks as a tribute to Virginia wine on Jamestown's 400th anniversary.

March 27-29, 2006

Participated in Capitol Hill briefings as part of the 2006 Annual Wine and Grape Policy Conference sponsored by WineAmerica and the Winegrape Growers of America. Presented Virginia wine industry facts and figures, along with comparative figures of the U.S. wine industry as a whole. Also, discussed the percentage of annual income endangered due to the loss of self-distribution provided by 45 Virginia wineries.

Participated in Virginia wine industry's promotional and marketing venture on the West Coast:

• January 24 - 26, 2006: Fourteen Virginia wineries submitted their wines for the regional wine tasting at the 2006 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium. An estimated 10,000 plus wine industry, commercial, and professional participants, along with some 500 wine suppliers and exhibitors, attended the event sponsored by the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the California Association of Wine-Grape Growers. • February 8, 2006: Santa Rosa city and county officials, business leaders, restaurateurs, retailers, media, regional winery representatives, plus representatives of the California Legislature’s Select Committee on Wine attended an evening of Virginia wine tastings. Assisted in sponsoring the opening presentation of the “Wine Across America” Exhibit at COPIA. The photo and poster exhibit features wine activities representing all 50 states were taken from the “Wine Across America” book produced by the National Geographic photographer, Charles O’Rear, and journalist wife, Daphne Larkin.

October 19-21, 2007

Acted as wine industry liaison to the 11th Annual Shenandoah Valley Hot Air Balloon and Wine Festival at Historic Long Branch Estate in Millwood, Clarke County. Some 70,000 people attended the festival which is billed as a "Celebration of Life Amid the Blue Ridge." Since the early 18th century, the rolling hills of the Historic Long Branch estate have been owned by a series of famous men: Lord Culpeper, Lord Fairfax, and Robert “King” Carter -- many of whom were friends of wine.

Coordinated the 2007 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition Awards Presentation Ceremony and winning wine tasting reception. This Capitol Hill event was conducted under the auspices of the Congressional Wine Caucus in the Longworth House Office Building’s elegant Agricultural Committee Room overlooking the Capitol. All top winning wines of the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition were featured. Also, started planning for a repeat event with future Atlantic Seaboard Competition award winners.

Started planning for the 33rd annual Virginia Wine Festival to be held at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas, Virginia, on September 27-28, 2008.

June-July 2007

Coordinated and conducted the Third Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition with cooperation from the Haymarket, Gainesville, and Manassas country clubs of Regency at Dominion Valley, Heritage Hunt, and Stonewall communities in Northern Virginia. The competition resulted in 450 entries from 102 wineries in 13 East Coast states. One Best of Show, 26 Best of Category, 32 gold, 104 silver, and 161 bronze medals were awarded.

June and July of 2008 will be a repeat for the Fourth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition at the same locations.

June 13-17, 2007

Provided coordination and organization for the Virginia wine industry’s support of the 2007 National Association of Counties Conference in Virginia. Some 2,000 county government participants from all 50 states attended the conference. 31 Virginia wineries participated in this project to show support and increase positive working relations with the Commonwealth’s 95 counties.

Dubbed "the premier legal event in Northern Virginia" and attended by over 400 legal professionals, legislative, business, and political leaders, the evening provided a great opportunity to showcase Virginia wines and discuss state and national legislative issues that can improve the growth and economic viability of the wine industry. Started in 1998, the event recognizes and honors those who serve Virginia in their capacities on the bench or in elected positions.

Also, drafted a portion of the Director-General of the Foreign Service’s remarks noting America’s wine history. Attended by over 250 members of the U.S. Foreign Affairs community from the White House, NSC, Departments of State, Defense, and Intelligence, plus other concerned agencies and foreign policy groups, the Foreign Affairs Day ceremony is a special opportunity to honor American Foreign Service Association employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Shared MKF Research's compilation of United States Wine Industry Facts and Figures for 2007. Did you know that the United States:

• Accounts for 9.9% of the world grape production (3rd after Italy and Spain) accomplished on only 4.8% of the world’s vineyard acreage.
• Represents about 10% of world wine production (4th after France, Italy, and Spain).
• Exports $675 million of American wine to place 7th worldwide in wine exports.

March 18-21, 2007

Participated in the 2007 Wine and Grape Policy Conference hosted by the Winegrape Growers of America and WineAmerica. Reviewed national legislation and communicated our views to the United States Congress. Major issues were:

• The Farm Bill, which will fund the operations of the Department of Agriculture. The conference specifically was interested in the recognition of specialty crops as a major element of agricultural endeavor, and that specialty crops be given treatment equal to that of the five major program crops.
•  
• AgJOBS, which recognizes the struggle of America’s wineries and grape growers to find legal, affordable and reliable agricultural labor.
•  
• Taxes, especially estate taxes, which jeopardize the existence of family owned vineyards and wineries as the business is passed from one generation to another. Highlights included (1) association health care plans, which would permit associations to offer group health care insurance for the benefit of vineyard and winery workers, and (2) conservation easements to allow farmland to be placed in reserve to prevent the loss of valuable farmland to urban developers.
•  
• Grape and wine research to support the continuing development of grapes and wines of superior quality and value, particularly, support to the Agriculture Research Service and its various activities in support of viticulture and enology.
•  
• The continuation of the special program to control and prevent Pierce’s Disease.

February 14-17, 2007

Presented wine history lectures focusing on 1607 Jamestown and Colonial America up to present day, accompanied by examples of five wines that represent the evolution of winemaking in America: Scuppernong, Madeira, Native American, French Hybrid and Vinifera grape wines.

Presentation was given at the Fourth International Wine and Heart Health Summit at the Silverado Resort Conference Center in Napa. This symposium was attended by some of the world’s top doctors and medical researchers, including Dr. Curtis Ellison and Dr. Serge Renaud of French Paradox fame, etc.

January 26-28, 2007

Presented American wine history lecture, “1607 to Present Day,” at COPIA in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

Conducted first-ever, special public tastings of Virginia and other East Coast award-winning wines at COPIA and, for the tenth year, at the Napa Valley Lodge in Yountville, as well as smaller tastings with California-based media contacts and wine industry leaders. Wines tasted were Best of Category winners of the 2006 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition.

January 23-25, 2007

Participated in the 2007 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium held in Sacramento, California. Presented state and national wine industry concerns at conference collateral meetings of the Winegrape Growers of America, Family Winemakers, and other wine trade associations. Diverse variety of topics ranged from global warming to guest worker issues.

Plan to attend the 2008 Symposium and organize the tasting of the 2007 Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition Best of Category wines at the symposium’s regional tasting of American wines.

November 2008

Conducted public tasting of 2008 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition winning wines at the Regency at Dominion Valley Country Club, conducted under a special ABC permit. Started planning for a November 2009 public tasting.

Started planning for the 34th annual Virginia Wine Festival to be held at the Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, Virginia, on September 19-20, 2009.

Coordinated and conducted the Fourth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition with sponsorship from Arton Glassware and Ceramics Decorators, Girls’ Night Out Tours, and the active adult communities of Regency at Dominion Valley as well as Stonewall and Heritage Hunt in Northern Virginia.

The competition resulted in wine entries from 100 wineries in 12 East Coast states. One Best of Show, 30 Best of Category, 56 gold, 120 silver, and 157 bronze medals were awarded.

Participated in the 2008 Wine and Grape Policy Conference hosted by the Winegrape Growers of America and WineAmerica. Focused on the major issues and concerns facing the continued economic and sustainable growth of the American wine industry. Briefed key Congressional committees, members, and senior staff concerned with agriculture and wine industry issues. Major issues were:

• Grape Facts, which tells how the grape industry generates jobs, exports, tax revenues, tourism and, of course, outstanding wines, juices, raisins, and table grapes.
• The Farm Bill, recognizing for the first time the importance of specialty crops (fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, nursery crops and floriculture.
• AgJOBS, emphasizing the need for legal, affordable workers capable of performing physical labor to tend and harvest the crops.
• Taxes, focusing on (1) a revision of the tax structure that threatens the family farm and wineries in the case of the death of the principle operator; (2) the need for group health insurance plans that would be economically attainable in order to provide the much needed health care for employees; and (3) a permanent extension of the conservation easement donation tax credit which expired in 2007.
• Grape and Wine Research, higlighting the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) which has been extremely valuable in addressing the needs for control of disease and insect infestations that affect plants and crops of the grape growing industry.
• Pierce’s Disease, discussing research to control a particularly deadly affliction that affects Vinifera grape plants and is spread by the Glassy Winged Sharp Shooter, a flying insect that bores into the vine canes to feed on the sap and inserts the spores of Pierce’s Disease which then destroys the plant.

Presented wine history lecture and tasting at annual meeting of the Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation and Virginia Farm Bureau Women’s Committee in Williamsburg, Virginia. The foundation is an educational program which encourages and enhances agricultural literacy and helps teachers integrate the study of this vast industry into existing curriculum. The committee provides leadership and service opportunities for farm women, encourages participation in agricultural and rural community issues, and sponsors events that help educate the non-farming public about agriculture.

Conducted special public tastings of Virginia and other East Coast award-winning wines at COPIA and, for the eleventh year, at the Napa Valley Lodge in Yountville, as well as smaller tastings with California-based media contacts and wine industry leaders. Wines tasted were Best of Category winners of the 2007 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition.

Conducted public tasting of 2009 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition winning wines at the Regency at Dominion Valley Country Club, conducted under a special ABC permit. Started planning for a November 2010 public tasting.

October 2-4, 2009

Acted as industry liaison and wine consultant for the Mount Vernon Fall Wine Festival and Sunset Tour. Managed the selection of 17 wineries through a lottery system that gives Commonwealth’s wineries an opportunity to offer their wines for tastings and sale. Celebrated the history of wine in Virginia by discussing Washington’s attempts at creating a vineyard and highlighting wine-related items inside the mansion.

Coordinated 2009 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition Awards Presentation Ceremony and wine tasting reception in the House Agricultural Committee Room of the Longworth House Office Building. Under the auspices of the Congressional Wine Caucus, chaired by Representatives Mike Thompson and George Radanovich, the event drew over 350 Congressional staff personnel, including many Chiefs of Staff and Legislative Assistants who have wine and alcohol beverage matters as part of their legislative portfolios, plus a better than usual attendance by members of Congress and representatives of the wine industry. The reception honored all award winners including attendees from New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

September 19-20, 2009

Hosted the 34th Annual Virginia Wine Festival at the Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, Virginia. The festival celebrates the success of Virginia wine, is the oldest wine festival on the East Coast, and is conducted as a fund-raiser to support the viticulture community through advocacy, education, promotion, and support. Besides wine tastings from over 60 Virginia wineries, attendees can enjoy educational seminars, gourmet food pairings, local artisans, and concerts.

Started planning for the 35th annual Virginia Wine Festival to be held at the same venue on September 19-20, 2010.

June-July 2009

Coordinated and conducted the Fifth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition in Haymarket, Virginia. All wines were judged by a team of twenty experienced judges, coming from eight states and the District of Columbia. These judges range from winemakers, wine retailers, sommeliers, wine educators, wine writers, and general wine appreciators.

The competition resulted in wine entries from 109 wineries in 11 East Coast states. One Best of Show, 21 Best of Category, 29 gold, 101 silver, and 166 bronze medals were awarded.

March 22-25, 2009

Participated in the 2009 Wine and Grape Policy Conference hosted by the Winegrape Growers of America and WineAmerica. Focused on the major issues and concerns facing the continued economic and sustainable growth of the American wine industry. Briefed key Congressional committees, members, and senior staff concerned with agriculture and wine industry issues. Major issues were:

• Grape Facts, which tells how the grape industry generates jobs, exports, tax revenues, tourism and, of course, outstanding wines, juices, raisins, and table grapes.
• Food Safety, which discusses ongoing congressional efforts to fix the broken food safety system.
• Funding the Battle Against Pierce’s Disease, discussing research to control a particularly deadly affliction that affects Vinifera grape plants and is spread by the Glassy Winged Sharp Shooter, a flying insect that bores into the vine canes to feed on the sap and inserts the spores of Pierce’s Disease which then destroys the plant.
• AgJOBS, also known as the Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits, and Security Act.
• Taxes, focusing on estate taxes, conversation easement, and association health care plans.
• Grape and Wine Research, higlighting the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) which has been extremely valuable in helping the U.S. remain competitive with foreign producers, improve the environmental quality of grape growing practices, as well as combat and prevent grape diseases.
• Market Access Program (MAP), which uses funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) to aid in the creation, expansion, and maintenance of foreign markets for U.S. agricultural products.

Coordinated 2010 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition Awards Presentation Ceremony and wine tasting in the House Agricultural Committee Room of the Longworth House Office Building. Congressional Wine Caucus members and senior staff hosted the reception to honor all award winners including attendees from Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. Members of the media, the American Wine Society (AWS), and Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine (KOV) were also there to toast the recipients.

These judges included winemakers, wine retailers, sommeliers, wine educators, wine writers, and club beverage managers.

The competition resulted in wine entries from 110 wineries in 11 East Coast states. One Best of Show, 32 Best of Category, 34 gold, 111 silver, and 188 bronze medals were awarded.

Poured Virginia wines to complement the annual U.S. Foreign Affairs Day diplomatic luncheon in the elegant Benjamin Franklin reception room atop the Department of State building in Washington, D.C. Wines selected were enjoyed by 250 invited guests, representing all sectors of the U.S. Foreign Affairs community.

Over a thousand retired Foreign Service personnel, current members of the State Department, and other related foreign affairs agencies and organizations attended the annual meeting.

Conducted a presentation and tasting of award-winning wines from the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition at the 2010 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California. Also, presented a wine history interactive lecture and hosted two working luncheons. More than 11,000 wine industry personnel and suppliers attended this year's conference.
